“Mom, it’s the craziest idea ever. He wants to buy the house for sale down the street.”

Mom’s eyes widened. “Oh, dear. The squalid one with the tall weeds that looks condemned?”

“That’s the one.”

“Sounds serious. I’ll put on some coffee.”

Minutes later, Irelynn took a sip of freshly-brewed coffee. “It is serious, Mom. I mean, that’s too close for my taste.”

“I was thinking more about that poor house. It might fall down.”

“Mom, really. What about the fact that he will be right down the street? As in, right down the street?”

“I thought the two of you were getting along better.”

Irelynn tossed a glance at Mia and Max who had dragged out the toybox and had toys scattered everywhere. Had Mom gone shopping again for toys for her grandchildren?

“We are getting along better, but I still don’t like him.” Not really. Or at least not that much.

“Oh. How disappointing. I sure do like Gram.”

“Mom, you can like Gram whether Quinton and I are friends or not.”

Mom appeared to ponder that. “True. Perhaps Quinton is thinking of the convenience of it all.”

“He is. That and it’s close to the pathways since he’s a runner.”

“Hmmm. Just like someone else I know. Could it be that you two have something in common?” Mom didn’t wait for Irelynn’s objection. “No wait, you have several things in common. You both love God, the twins, pizza, and running. Is that four things?”

“Mom, you’re not helping. Whose side are you on anyway?”

“Your side, dear. Always your side. I’m loyal to a fault. You know that. I’m just being realistic here. Now, is the house safe for the children?”

Irelynn cringed. “Not as it is at the present moment. The place is gross. But I do know that Quinton can fix it up and make it look nice. He does have that talent. I’ve seen the new house he’s building too, and it’s phenomenal.”

“Did you just say something positive about your nemesis?”

“Shh, Mom, don’t let word get out.”

Mom laughed. “If you think he can fix it up to where it’s safe for the children, as that is our number one priority, is it not?”

“Yes.”

“Then would it be so bad to have him that close? Think of the ease when they get older, especially.”

“My mother. The voice of reason.”

Mom beamed. “I earned that title.”

“And get this. The real estate agent calls him ‘Quinty’ and insinuates they’re an item.” Although why that bothered her, she didn’t know. Quinton could date that uppity Isabelle for all she cared.

Right?

“Really?” asked Mom.

“Yes. She practically hangs all over him. She’s gorgeous and I felt like a country bumpkin next to her in my workout clothes.”

“I didn’t realize Quinton had a girlfriend. Gram never mentioned it.”

Irelynn sucked in her breath. “Do you and Gram talk about us?”

“We’ve been known to mention you two a time or two.”

“What do you talk about?”

“Not much.” Mom shrugged, but it was a rather suspicious shrug in Irelynn’s opinion.

“Mom, please tell me the two of you aren’t getting any ideas.”

“Ideas? No, although you two really could be a…”

“No, absolutely not.
